Progressives are often faulted for lacking “values.” This criticism is leveled with particular frequency in the area of family, where we are often accused of valuing only permissiveness. Although certain that our movement is rooted firmly in common values, enunciating our shared value commitments has proven difficult, frustrating, and ineffective. We feel strongly that being able to identify and communicate our values will be vital to the success of the progressive movement in the future, and we think the family is a good starting point for that discussion.
